abstract

in atom transfer radical polymerization (atrp) of methyl acrylate (ma) with polyvinyl acetate macroinitiator in bulk at 90°c the plots of ln [m]0/[m] increased linearly with reaction time. the apparent propagation rate constant (kp app) of the reaction was obtained from the linear curve and used to calculate the free macroradical concentration ([r°]) in polymerization medium. the [r°] and also kp app values decreased with concentration of cucl2 (deactivator). the slope and extrapolation values of the linear curve of (kp app)-1 versus cucl2 concentrations and kinetic equations were used to calculate ka and kd/ki constants to be 2.576×10-4 m-1.s-1 and 222. the mn values of block copolymers obtained by gpc were nearly in agreement with the theoretical values and increased linearly with conversion. furthermore, pdi decreased with conversion due to the controlled/living behavior of the atrp with pvac macroinitiator. the kp app and [r°] values increased with catalyst and macroinitiator concentrations and also decreased with monomer concentration. the polymerization medium undergone termination reactions were attributed to increases of the macroradical concentration. the ratio of kt/keq = 4.313×1020 was also calculated on the basis of fischer equation. furthermore, the mn values of the block copolymers decreased with free macroradical concentration and the pdi values were also broadened due to termination reaction.

Modification of Polyvinyl Alcohol via Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization for Targeted Drug Delivery Applications

In current study,a hydrogel based on biocompatible polymerwas prepared. The functionalization of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)with epichlorohydrin(ECH) to produce epichlorohydrin-g-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA/ECH) as a suitable macroinitiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) reaction was investigated.ThenN-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) waspolymerized on the surface of macroinitiatorin presence of...

Kinetic Insights into the Iron-Based Electrochemically Mediated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate

An ironand methyl methacrylate (MMA)-based electrochemically mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (eATRP) system was developed for the first time. Kinetic behaviors, including the effect of applied potential and catalyst loading, were systematically investigated. Results indicated that with more negative electrode potential, the polymerization rate increased until the mass transport li...

A Novel Initiator of [5-(benzyloxy)-4-oxo-4H-pyran-2-yl]methyl-2-bromo-2-methylpropanoateas in Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization of Styrene and Methyl Methacrylate

A novel nano-initiator containing kojic acid moiety, [5-(benzyloxy)-4-oxo-4H-pyran-2-yl)methyl-2-bromo-2-methylpropanoate was synthesized by the reaction of 5-(benzyloxy)-2-(hydroxymethyl)-4H-pyran-4-one with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide in triethylamine and used as initiator in the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene and methyl methacrylate in the presence of Cu(0)/CuCl2and N,N...

poly(vinyl acetate)-based block copolymer/clay nanocomposites prepared by in situ atom transfer radical polymerization

atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene (st) and methyl methacrylate (mma) was performed at 90oc in the absence and presence of nanoclay (cloisite 30b). trichloromethyl-terminated poly(vinyl acetate) telomerand cucl/ pmdeta were used as a macroinitiator and catalyst system, respectively. the experimental results showed that the atom transfer radical polymerization of st and mma in the a...
